Tom Sturdivant threw a shutout and Mickey Mantle went two for five with two runs batted in as the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 10-0. That same day the cornerstone for the Dirksen Building in Washington D. C. was laid, Patrick Stewart had his sweet sixteen party and Helen and Ronald Rozzell of Oklahoma City welcomed their second child into the world.
It is no coincidence that later that year Mantle would win the Triple Crown, the Yankees would win the World Series (with Don Larsen pitching a perfect game) and the University of Oklahoma football team went undefeated, winning a national championship for the second year in a row.
